Personalising Your Ceremony – Rituals, Readings and Unique Touches
The Love and Confetti Guide: The ultimate guide to designing your wedding ceremony and beyond.
Every couple wants their ceremony to feel like them. While the legal side of a wedding is fairly straightforward, the way you shape the rest of your ceremony is where your personality, values and story really come alive.
So how do you make it personal without overcomplicating things? Here are some ideas that can bring meaning, warmth, and a touch of “you” to your big day.
Rituals That Mean Something
Rituals work best when they’re authentic to you, not just added in because they’re “a thing.” A few examples that can feel genuine:
Tree Planting: Perfect for couples with children, a symbol of the family you’ve built and will continue to nurture.
Ring Warming: Your rings are passed among your guests, each adding a silent blessing or wish before you exchange them.
Sand Ceremony or Cocktail Mixing: A fun way to symbolise two becoming one, especially outdoors or at relaxed weddings.
In my Love & Confetti Guide, I share many more examples of rituals and symbolic gestures, along with ideas to help you choose the ones that really resonate with you.
Readings - Keep Them Intentional
I don’t usually encourage long readings, as they’re often the first moment that disconnects your guests. But when a poem, quote or blessing is truly meaningful to you, it can be powerful. The key is making sure it reflects who you are, rather than filling time.
Ways to Involve Family & Friends
Personal touches can also come through in who is involved in your ceremony:
Having a grandparent or parent bring forward the rings
Involving your children in a ritual or giving them a special mention
Including your pets (yes, they can be ring bearers too!)
These small moments create big memories.
Your Love Story
One of the most special ways to personalise your ceremony is through your love story. This is where your guests are invited into your world, to hear how you met, the moments that brought you here, what you love about each other and why today matters.
It’s more than words on a page; it’s the heartbeat of your ceremony. Your story has a way of making guests laugh, shed a tear and feel connected to the two of you in the most beautiful way. No two stories are the same, and that’s what makes them unforgettable.
Keep It Simple
Remember, personalising doesn’t mean making things longer or more complicated. It’s about weaving in just enough to reflect you. When something feels authentic, your guests will feel connected and you’ll remember it forever.
