Writing Your Own Vows

Your vows don’t need to sound like poetry, they just need to sound like you.

For many couples, vows are the heart of the ceremony. They’re the promises you make for your marriage, personal, powerful and often the bit that has everyone reaching for the tissues (or laughing, depending on your style!).

But here’s the thing: you don’t have to write your own vows. Some couples prefer to keep things simple and stick to the legal vows only, and that’s completely fine. Others like to add personal promises on top. If you do want to write them, here are a few tips to make it easier.

Keep It Personal

Your vows don’t need to sound like poetry, they just need to sound like you. Think about the things you truly want to promise: supporting each other, sharing laughter, being there through the ups and downs. Use words that feel natural, not borrowed.

Think About Your Story

A great place to start is your journey together. You could include a little nod to how you met, your favourite quirks, or a memory that sums up your love. Just a sentence or two can make your vows feel unique.

Keep It Balanced

Vows work best when they’re roughly the same length. You don’t want one person making 10 promises while the other says 2! I’ll guide you both so your vows feel balanced, but still true to each of you.

Add a Mix of Heart and Lightness

The best vows are a blend of heartfelt promises and those little touches of fun that reflect who you are. For example:

  • “I promise to love you through every season of life and never watch the next episode without you.”

  • “I vow to always have your back, even when it comes to choosing what’s for dinner (because I know you’ll never decide).”

Practice Out Loud

When you’ve written your vows, say them out loud. Do they feel comfortable? Do the words flow?

Our minds love to play tricks, what we think we’ve written often sounds completely different when spoken aloud! Reading your vows out loud helps you catch anything clunky, trim down the tricky bits and make sure the words feel natural. That way, you’ll feel confident and relaxed when the moment comes.

Bonus: Your Love & Confetti Guide

When we work together, you won’t be left staring at a blank page wondering where to start. All of my couples receive my Love & Confetti Guide, which is packed with:

  • 10 reasons why writing your vows matters (and why couples always say it’s worth it)

  • Sentence starters and prompts to help you get the words flowing

  • What to say (and what not to say!), remember, your vows are promises, not a comedy roast

  • Loads of sample vows for inspiration, from short and sweet to romantic and heartfelt

And here’s my top tip: keep your vows no longer than about 250 words. That way, the ceremony stays fresh and flowing, without dragging on. If you’ve written more than that, it doesn’t go to waste, write the rest as a letter to your partner and share it in your own private love bubble moment.

Bonus: Vow Cards

On your wedding day, I’ll provide you with beautifully printed vow cards. That way, you won’t be holding a crumpled bit of paper, and you can keep them forever as a keepsake a I’ll put them with your Marriage Certificate.
